Juniper harvesting and manufacturing processes have been studied. Physical and mechanical properties have been examined and markets for a wide variety of juniper products have been explored. The products that we bring to market are the round and square posts, boards, and landscaping bark. We sell for resale only to the lumber retailers and farm/ranch supply stores. The natural durability of the Western Juniper wood species makes it a safe, organic alternative to treated wood.

When we talk about durability we want to talk directly to the heartwood content. There are different grades for different applications. We are sorting them in these 3 ways:

ALL HEART
100% Heartwood for maximum durability.
Special Order Only
Full sawn & Sized – Band saw +/- 1/16”
All heart, No wane

PREMIUM
This grade was developed specifically to offer the best price without losing the in-ground heartwood durability. Since trees have a natural taper, one end of the product will be all heartwood, while the other end will have some sapwood. The all heart end goes into the ground.
70%+ Heartwood for in-ground use
Full Sawn Rough & Sized – Band saw
+/- 1/16”
Light wane on an occasional piece

LANDSCAPE
This is a millrun grade with no prior selection. An affordable option for all your above ground landscaping needs. An eco-friendly substitute for used railroad ties.
No Heartwood Specifications
Full Sawn Rough – Circular saw +/- 1/2"
Wane is allowed on one or two edges

Since 2006 we have been working to develop these Western Juniper wood products and introduce them as an organic alternative. In January of 2007 the California Fresh Fruit and Raisin News published an article that presented our new option for growers and delineated it's advantages to steel and treated wood. Click here to view our low resolution copy of the whole article. For the free online version of this publication, go to myfreshfruit.com.

These posts and poles have often been put into duty as end posts in trellising systems, such as vineyards (see photos below), and as fence posts in wire fencing projects. The organic farmers and ranchers have been very receptive to this product. Below are sizes we have supplied and/or put into our inventory for stock. Click on the sizes that are underlined to see stock photo.

Stop horses from chewing on fences and stables! A study by Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine shows that using Western Juniper boards drastically reduces damage caused by wood chewing horses.

6 out of 10 Western Juniper boards showed no signs of chewing, while the Doug Fir boards had 1 out of 10 with no signs of chewing. The average volume of wood lost by chewing was 12 times higher in Doug Fir. This info is based on the unpublished Oregon State University report entitled Reduced Horse Wood Chewing Of Juniper -PDF. The mills are producing Full Sawn Rough 2"x6", 2"x8", and 2"x12".

Baled for easy handling, the 3/4 Yard Bales (20.25 cubic feet; 50 lbs.each) are perfect for landscaping areas usually covered with redwood and cedar bark. It lays flat and has the aromatic smell similar to cedar bark. Juniper bark has the same properties as Redwood and Cedar in that it has excellent anti-fungal components with the added benefit of being a natural termicide.

Throw 1-2 bales into your car trunk and you are driving home up to 1.5 cubic yards (40.5 cubic feet) of ground cover. 10 bales will fit in a standard truck bed. Throw 10 more on top, tie down your load, and you have 15 cubic yards! No shovels or wheelbarrows required.

12 bales per pallet (above). Single bale is spread out (below).

Each bale measures approximately 16" x 20" x 24"D. When you open that bale, the shredded bark will spread out to cover an area measuring 9ft x 9ft x 3" deep. The bark ships on pallets, 12 bales per a pallet, and each pallet is plastic wrapped before shipping. Click on images.
