NewAg (Natural Eco-friendly Wood for Agriculture) posts are naturally durable, and preservative treatment is not necessary. This organic alternative is milled out of Western Juniper trees and has none of the disposal problems associated with treated wood and steel.

Western Juniper has been used for decades as fence posts, poles, corrals... because it is extremely durable and resistant to rot. In a long term fence post service life study since 1928, Oregon State University reported Western Juniper to last 30+ years, longer than any other untreated western species.

In general, sapwood, regardless of species, has a low resistance to decay. There is no evidence that heartwood improves the performance of adjacent sapwood, and that also goes for the Redwood and Cedar species. So when we talk about durability we want to talk directly to the heartwood content.

These posts have often been put into duty as end posts in trellising systems, such as vineyards (see photos below), and as fence posts in wire fencing projects. The organic farmers and ranchers have been very receptive to this product. Below are sizes we have supplied and/or put into our inventory for stock. A natural benefit of using wood fence posts is how they enhance the beauty of the landscape.
Wood posts are exceptionally strong, providing a high strength-to-weight ratio.
Wood posts stay in the ground better (than steel) because more surface area is in contact with the surrounding soil.
Nail withdrawal strength of Western Juniper is 197psi, higher than Douglas Fir (184psi) and Ponderosa Pine (117psi).
Stop horses from chewing on fences and stables! A study by Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine shows that using Western Juniper boards drastically reduces damage caused by wood chewing horses.

6 out of 10 Western Juniper boards showed no signs of chewing, while the Doug Fir boards had 1 out of 10 with no signs of chewing. The average volume of wood lost by chewing was 12 times higher in Doug Fir. This info is based on the unpublished Oregon State University report entitled Reduced Horse Wood Chewing Of Juniper -PDF.

Presently the mills are only producing Full Sawn Rough 2"x6"x 8’ boards.
