NewAg Juniper wood products are naturally durable, and preservative treatment is not necessary. It's the only renewable and durable organic alternative. They are milled out of Western Juniper trees and have none of the disposal problems associated with treated wood and steel.

We are the California distributor for the largest Juniper mill in Oregon, and we work closely with The Western Juniper Commercialization Project. This project has enabled us to acquire an abundance of information on Western Juniper derived from the many lengthy studies on the properties and advantages of Western Juniper wood. It connects all sides and in doing so we have also established business relations with the sawyers that operate smaller portable juniper mills in Oregon.

Western Juniper has been used for decades as fence posts, poles, corrals... because it is extremely durable and resistant to rot. In a long term fence post service life study since 1928, Oregon State University reported Western Juniper to last 30+ years, longer than any other untreated western species.

In general, sapwood, regardless of species, has a low resistance to decay. There is no evidence that heartwood improves the performance of adjacent sapwood, and that also goes for the Redwood and Cedar species. So when we talk about durability we want to talk directly to the heartwood content.

There are going to be different uses for different NewAg Juniper products. The product grades we use describe the percentage of heartwood content and appearance. You may print out the information sheet on this page or click on the link below for more information.

A natural benefit of using wood fence posts is how they enhance the beauty of the landscape.
Wood posts are exceptionally strong, providing a high strength-to-weight ratio.
Wood posts stay in the ground better (than steel) because more surface area is in contact with the surrounding soil.
Nail withdrawal strength of Western Juniper is 197psi, higher than Douglas Fir (184psi) and Ponderosa Pine (117psi).
